Philla Barkhorn grew up in Summit, NJ. Her grandfather, Peter Helck, was a renowned illustrator. An interested and capable artist as a teenager, Philla continued to study and produce art while she and her husband raised three children. Once the youngest started school in 2006 she was able to invest time in serious and intense study of portraiture. She is very grateful to have been able to study with some of the tri-state’s finest artists, such as Monica Baumann, Edmond Rochat and Gregory Mortenson. Philla teaches privately out of her Chatham, NJ studio.
